Brief History: Philippines Annual Conference East

By: Rev. Anacleto G. Guerrero
PACE Conference Historian
Chair, Commission on Archives & History
---
Introduction
---
Inevitably, whether we accept it or otherwise, the Church will move on, not leaving people behind in oblivion but it will lift them up into the realm of faith. Hopefully, or rather prayerfully, this piece of work will keep us in touch with the gist of reality, and with the not-too-distant past. This generation will pass and so does the next, but let some footprints be visible that others may see and, again, prayerfully, eventually will follow. If good examples could be gleaned from this piece of work let them be reflected in our unqualified respect for the past and in our anticipation for a brighter future.
---
The Commission (Commission on Archives and History) in general, and the author in particular, move with appreciation to all who have shared facts and figures about people and events. All contributions unselfishly shared, we believe, and as far as we understand, are marks of concerns and willingness to brave the tide of memory and remembrance. Let it be said that God's wondrous guidance made all of these possible. We are just instruments of God's fingers writing history in our lives. Remember with us with thanksgiving.

Historical Statement
(See also Historical Statement, 1996 Official Journal of the Philippines Annual Conference East, 4th Regular Session, March 27-30, 1996, page 364.)
---
The Philippines Central Conference, during its 15th regular session in November 1992 held at Knox Memorial United Methodist Church, authorized the Philippines Annual Conference to divide into three annual conferences, namely: (1) Philippines Annual Conference (the former East Metro Manila District; (2) East Philippines Annual Conference (the former East Manila District); and (3) Bicol Philippines Provisional Annual Conference (the former Bicol Mission District).
---
The Philippines Conference include some cities and towns of Metro Manila including the provinces of Cavite, Laguna and Batangas. East Philippines Annual Conference have some of the cities and towns of Metro Manila together with the provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Quezon and Marinduque. Bicol Provisional Annual Conference includes Bicol, Catanduanes and Masbate.
---
On January 30, 1993, at a special session of the mother conference, the old Philippines Annual Conference, the presiding bishop, Rev. Dr. Emerito P. Nacpil, declared the action of the Philippines Central Conference (Special Session Action 93:005) to divide, final and executory. Local churches and/or charge conferences, mission points and/or outreaches, and clergy members and other workers that composed the former districts became the composition of the new annual conferences. On the same occasion, the annual conferences met in an inaugural session. The East Philippines Annual Conference constituted ad hoc boards, commissions and committees that elected Rustico Panganiban as Conference Lay Leader. However, during its first regular session on May 26-30, 1993 held at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City, the East Philippines Annual Conference, by Action 93:036, adopted the name PHILIPPINES ANNUAL CONFERENCE EAST, and in Pilipino, KOMPERENSIYA ANWAL NG PILIPINAS SILANGAN.

Conclusion
---
This material/presentation is obviously incomplete and perfectly unfinished. It will take a lifetime or more to complete and/or finish it in order to be able to include all items we want to include. However, just as it is, only as a determined start, it will evolve and develop into a more encompassing and better expression of facts which will include every piece of information available. The Commission on Archives and History of PACE, particularly the chair and editor, would love to receive more pieces of information to be included. Shortcomings herein are our basic responsibility, but your suggestions will be seriously and eagerly considered. Surely, there are other materials worthy to become part and parcel of this presentation. Why don't you get in touch with us or give us a ring.
