KAMUNING FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
[By: Rev. Anacleto G. Guerrero, KFUMC Administrative Pastor CY 1993-2000]
...
Introduction
...July 21, 1994 marks the 53rd founding anniversary of the Kamuning First United Methodist Church (KFUMC), now a part of Quezon City District, Philippines Annual Conference East. The local church bears the marks of a rich history and struggle to attain its present status. It has its brave beginnings and determined background through men and women who have dedicated themselves and committed their lives to the Almighty Lord, their Guide and Strength.
...
Through the Years
...Almost three years after the National Assembly enacted Commonwealth Act No. 502 creating Quezon City on October 12, 1938, Mr. Benjamin Tuason, a Methodist Christian living in Barrio Obrero in Diliman moved around the community alone in 1941 looking for fellow Christian evangelicals and protestants. He was able to find members of different protestant denominations, notably the Cabacungan family (Disciples of Christ), Carbonel family (UCCP), Navarro, Perchardo, Maatubang and Santillan families (Baptist), Shia family (Presbyterian), and the Soriano and Tuason families (Methodist). These families formed the nucleus of the local congregation. Other families which moved from the provinces and later joined the congregation through the untiring efforts of Mr. Tuason included the Tignos, Ganaciases, Tanajeros, Baculis, Reyeses, Dagumis, Tamayos, Pascuals, Almontes, Aherreras, Bides, Garcias, Encarnacions, Alcantaras, Faralans, Bellos, de Panos, Vivases, Raralios and others.
...The first wave of families met together for worship and fellowship without the benefit of a beautiful church edifice except their homes. The Soriano residence at #82 K-1st Street was one of the first venues of Sunday worship activities. Mr. Tuason, the initiator, oftentimes led the group in praising and worshiping the Lord in the absence of a minister. It was at this point in time that Rev. Guillermo Manuel was designated as their pastor, in addition to his work in Marikina and other places in Manila. On July 21, 1941, the first Quarterly Conference was called and was presided over by the Rev. Francisco Galvez, district superintendent of Manila and suburbs, Philippines Annual Conference. The Japanese occupation in 1941 did not stop the congregation to worship. Mr. Tuason continued to take care of the members who were left behind in Quezon City when others have evacuated to the provinces.
...In July 1942, DS Galvez appointed Rev. Leonardo Fileo as the pastor-in-charge. It was at this time that Rev. Galvez conducted the second Quarterly Conference that elected Mr. Vicente Tigno as chairman of the Official Board, and Mr. Tuason as Lay Leader. When Rev. Prudencio Tuason, father of Mr. Tuason, arrived from Pampanga, he took over the pastor of the congregation. In February 1943, during the Philippines Annual Conference session at Knox Memorial Methodist Church, Rizal Avenue, Manila with Bishop Dionisio D. Alejandro as presiding officer, Kamuning Methodist Church was formally recognized as a local congregation. Rev. Prudencio Tuason was appointed as the pastor and he served without any designated salary. Through the financial assistance of the Llenado and Tigno families, the left back wing of the Tuason residence was turned into a better worshiping venue. Mr. Geronimo Yabut and his family provided wooden benches for worshipers. Mr. Andres Encarnacion contributed to the fencing and plastering of the adobe fences of the place.
...
The Name Issue
...There was a question of name before the local church is known as it is today. Among others, names like "Christian Fellowship Church" and "Cosmopolitan Christian Church" were mentioned until "First Methodist Church of Kamuning" (FMCK) was seriously considered. After April 23, 1968, when the United Methodist Church (composed of The Evangelical United Brethren and The Methodist Church) was created by an Enabling Act or a General Conference action, the name Kamuning First United Methodist Church came into being and it is carried on to this day.
...
Further Developments
...When Rev. Tuason was appointed to another local church, the Kamuning congregation received Rev. Donato Capuli as their minister. It was during the term of Rev. Ruben Candelaria as district superintendent when the church lot was transferred to the Methodist Church under the name of Rev. Tuason. In 1956, when Rev. Guillermo Manuel was reassigned to Kamuning (1954-1957), a philanthropist businesswoman by the name of Magdalena Lapuz sold a lot to the congregation for P18,000.00. The same amount was donated back to the local church to build the parsonage and some building extensions. This is where the present parsonage and junior chapel are located. In July 1957, the cornerstone of the present church sanctuary was laid with Bishop Jose L. Valencia, Sr. and DS Esteban Cruz in attendance. Construction of the main sanctuary started when Rev. Eduardo Cajiuat was the administrative pastor. A great help from Rev. and Mrs. Carlos Manacop completed the edifice. Major expenses for the altar was generously contributed by Dr. and Mrs. Tito Acuna and family who now reside in America. The pews, the pulpit, the lectern and other facilities were donated by numerous members who expressed their love for the Lord by their love-gifts. Church founding anniversary date was set July 21, 1941. Nearest Sunday to this July 21 is celebrated now as Anniversary Sunday.
...During the 25th founding anniversary of the church, when Rev. Hermogenes Cera, Jr. was the administrative pastor, the 400-square meter lot behind the parsonage and Junior Chapel was acquired with Engr. & Mrs. Pacifico Pinili contributing the biggest share. In 1967, when Rev. Clemente Zuniga, Jr. was the administrative pastor, the educational building annex was started. It was dedicated on the 28th Foundation Day of the church. By 1970 the walls of the church were moved to accommodate more worshipers. Rev. David L. Rodriguez holds the distinction of having the most number of years served as pastor of the church (13 years: 1972-1985). It was during his term in 1980 that Kamuning First UMC hosted for the first time the sessions of the Philippines Annual Conference. At about the same time the deaconesses' quarters, mini-gym, church kitchen and the custodians' quarters were built.
...A local church scholarship program or help scheme became one of the vital ministries of the local congregation. Successful scholars and/or recipients include Rev. Stanley de Pano (the first Filipino DS based in California, USA), Rev. Jose Movido (a practicing lawyer now in California, USA), Ms. Concordia Rimando Richwell (a kindergarten deaconess), Mrs. Clara Mina (CE deaconess), Rev. Homer Refuerzo (UTS professor), Rev. Ernesto Lorenzo (now in America), Rev. Adiel de Pano (based in the USA), and Rev. Dante Eleazar Simon (now studying at Fuller Theological Seminary, USA). Today, the local church and some families help seminary students (UTS and other seminaries), and student-deaconesses (enrolled at Harris Memorial College).
...

...
Developments in the 90's
...The 90s saw great stride in all phases of church activities and ministries. The local church cancelled its 50th Founding Anniversary dinner on July 24, 1991 and the allocated budget for this purpose to the tune of P20,000 together with P7,500 contributions from two families were donated to Cabangan UMC which church building collapsed, a Mt. Pinatubo lahar victim. In addition to this, the church paid the church workers P1,500.00 a month for the whole conference year. Also, some P40,000 worth of assorted relief goods -- food, clothes, medicines, groceries, tents, rice and others -- were personally brought by church leaders to Cabangan. During these years many have come to ask assistance for whatever church project they have or for some urgent needs.
...Evangelism and Mission programs were focused to the two mission points -- Cainta (Rizal) and Pansol (UP Balara, Q.C.). Continued allocation for Cainta mission (started during the term of Rev. Nonato Vengco) was P1,500 a month. Pansol Mission (which was started during the term of Dr. Meynardo Jose and was continued during the term of Rev. Remigio Panlaqui, now DS of Quezon City District) got an appropriation of P6,000 a month rentals for a worship center and for other religious activities like Bible study sessions and fellowship. It was in March 1994 (within the term of Rev. Anacleto G. Guerrero) during the Philippines Annual Conference East sessions at Taytay, Rizal that Pansol UMC was recognized as a new organized and established congregation.
...In 1993, Oplan KFKm-5 (Operation Plan, Kamuning First Kilometer 5 Radius) was launched by Rev. Anacleto G. Guerrero. It led to a series of seminars and workshops conducted by the administrative pastor and supportedly espoused by the local church leaders.
...The Philippines Annual Conference sessions in March 1994 witnessed a VERY FIRST in the history of Kamuning First UMC (and perhaps in the history of the whole United Methodist Church in the Philippines, or even in the world): SEVEN ACTIVE LEADERS DECIDED TO BECOME LOCAL PASTORS -- Bernardo C. Agaloos, Sr. (Retired Assistant DENR Secretary and Chairperson of the Administrative Board), Maximo S. Dumlao, Jr. (PMA Graduate, Retired General Manager of the Philippine Ports Authority and KFUMC Lay Leader), Edgar O. Refuerzo (Manager of a business venture and Chairperson of the Council on Ministries), Ramoncito C. Mison (Senior State Prosecutor and Chairperson of the Commission on Evangelism and Mission), Reuben M. Abenojar (a retired insurance executive and Chairperson of the Livelihood Program of the annual conference and the Quezon City District), Trinidad O. Abenojar (a GSIS Training Officer, a Ph.D. in Psychology and a UTS graduate in Religious Education), and Francisco Florendo (a CPA and in charge of Mission and Evangelism at Pansol). In 1994, all of them, except Pastor Florendo who is assigned at Pansol UMC, serve as assistant pastors at Kamuning UMC and in charge of worship services.
...In November 1993, Rev. Guerrero started the Ilocano Worship Service. The worshiping congregation celebrated its first anniversary in November 1994 at the second floor of the on-going multi-purpose building. Interim leaders were appointed among themselves to take care of some activities. Mrs. Lorna Andres was elected associate lay leader for the Ilocano Service during the February 1994 Charge Conference. Attendance on Sunday Services averages 70-85 worshipers. Since November 1994, together with the administrative and associate pastors, Pastors Reuben and Trinidad Abenojar took charge of most of its plans and activities.
...[Note: The latest news from members of Kamuning First United Methodist Church---the Ilocano Service and the Tagalog 1 Service were removed by local church's Church Council and the Ministerial Staff led by Rev. Dr. Simeon Latonero, administrative pastor, in September 2004. -Ed.]
...A 12-Million-Peso multi-purpose five-storey building project envisioned some years back by the local church was started on April 4, 1994. The ground breaking on March 20, 1994 was conducted by the Rev. Guerrero, the administrative pastor. After eight months a three-storey shell is already intact, the second floor used now by the Ilocano service, the UMM Sunday School and some church activities. The project is going on smoothly. In a couple of years the church hopes to use all floors as intended. The Building Committee is composed of Brilly Bernardez (Chairperson), Jose Ma. Tugas (Vice-Chairperson), and the members are: Samuel Aherrera, Maximo Dumlao, Jr., Manuel Molina, Dan Raralio, Ben Hur Refuerzo, Bonifacio de los Trinos, Jet Villanueva, Bernardo Agaloos, Sr., Marcelino Bautista, Generoso Vivas, Ricardo Manaloto, Ernesto Serote, Cromwell Refuerzo, Sheila Bernardez, Nathanael de Pano, Jr., and the administrative pastor as ex-officio member. MARIKINA UMC
[Data lifted from Souvenir Program: A Century of Methodism in Marikina, 2002]
---It started unexpectedly in February 1902 at the yard of a man named Felipe Valentin at Labasan (now Tan[i]ong). Pastor Candido Magno preached the first sermon to those who have gathered there. Persecution that included being jailed "for disturbing peace" was experienced. Governor Arturo Dancel was gracious enough to keep them out from the prison house. When membership grew they transferred to Niyugan (now Barangay Jesus de la Pena) in a 150 sq.m. lot. After seven year, on February 28, 1909, when Rev. Nicolas Zamora (then the pastor of St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church) left the church and founded the Iglesia Evangelica Metodista En Las Islas Filipinas (IEMELIF), many members of the congregation of Marikina joined Zamora's group and established a new church in Tan[i]ong.
...Those who stayed with the church continued their evangelistic efforts that led them to Taytay (Rizal); to San Mateo (Rizal). The church was renamed "Marikina Methodist Church" following the union of three Methodist churches at the General Conference in 1936. In 1956, the church was renamed "St. Luke Methodist Church." In 1993 the local church was named "Marikina United Methodist Church." The church supported mission work in Congeo (Antipolo), Parang (Marikina), Subay (Talim Island, Cardona, Rizal) and Boso-Boso (San Jose, Antipolo, Rizal).

ST. JOHN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
[Lifted from submitted and available materials] [By: Rev. Anacleto G. Guerrero]
[SJUMC Administrative Pastor, 2001-2003]
...
Introduction
... This historical presentation is from the perspective of the administrative pastor.
...
Nuggets of History
... A spiritual cornerstone was planted along Aurora Boulevard, Cubao, Quezon City some fifty years ago, in 1952 to be exact, by the Knox Memorial Methodist Church in Sta. Cruz, Manila. Upon the recommendation of Mr. Rufo Fabregas to the Official Board of Knox Memorial Methodist Church, the local congregation led by its minister, Rev. Juan Nabong, approved a mission work to be extended to the Protestant settlers of Quezon City, particularly those located at the housing projects of the late Philippine President Elpidio Quirino in Projects 2, 3 and 4. One of those who responded favorably to the efforts of Knox Church was Mr. & Mrs. Manuel Lorenzana who, in May 1952, negotiated to purchase a lot along Aurora Boulevard, Cubao area. The family paid P1,500.00 as down payment (sort of an earnest money) for the lot which is now the present site of St. John UMC. More than four years after, on December 20, 1956, the local congregation paid the full amount required.
...
The Beginning of a Journey of Faith
... A month after Knox Memorial Methodist Church approved the mission extension project in May 1952, a quonset hut believed to be the Cordero Chapel at Knox was transferred to Aurora Boulevard in June to be the place of worship of the Quezon City settlers. On the 13th of July that year, the local congregation was founded. Pastor Federico Sarenas preached the first sermon in Tagalog for the first Sunday worship service. Included among those who worshiped that day were the following families: Lorenzana, Velasco, Gacula, Lizano, Verzosa, Vinluan, Tovera, Espiritu, Silva, Quiocho, Delayon, Maghanoy, Tan, Balderama, and other unnamed families. The Lorenzana family donated the first church piano.
...
Rev. Mariano Berbano organized the first Sunday School class on July 27, 1952. Within the first month after its founding date, English Worship Service was conducted by a part-time pastor, Rev. Roman Quisol. He later became a full-time pastor for the Tagalog worship in 1953-1957, a good one quadrennium. (Note: Please see Annex list of church workers, pastors and deaconesses from 1952 to date.)
...
St. John: An Independent and Growing Church
... Six months after its founding, on January 4, 1953, St. John Methodist Church became independent from the direct supervision of Knox Memorial Methodist Church. An English worshiping congregation was established with Rev. John B. Holt as pastor. He had handled and conducted English services for five solid years, 1953-1958. A deaconess, Ms. Esperanza Cuisia, was appointed in June 1954 to give assistance to the work of the local church. It was also during those years that fundraising schemes were done to build a pastoral residence or a parsonage. It was in 1988 that the parsonage was renovated.
...
A new and bigger sanctuary was needed to accommodate the growing number of worshipers, so in January 1956, groundbreaking was done through the leadership of Mr. Rufo Fabregas, chairperson of the Official Board. Architectural designs were prepared by Arch. Samuel Garcia and construction was supervised by Mr. Manuel Lorenzana. With construction going on in 1958, the time for worship services were adjusted — English in the morning with Rev. John Holt, Tagalog in the afternoon with Rev. Leonardo Fileo, and Ilocano in the evening with Rev. Cenon Gacutan. It was also during 1958 that a Gideon Sunday was held.
...
During the 13th Founding Anniversary of the local church on July 11, 1965, the new and bigger sanctuary, new pews, together with a new Hammond organ were dedicated and blessed. It was on May 9, 1982, 17 years after, when the new Yamaha Portasound organ was dedicated. Major and Mrs. Andres C. Liberato brought home in 1968 from Basilan, Mindanao, pieces of almaciga lumber which was made into an altar cross and conference table, and kalantas wood made into a lectern. The preparations of these items were supervised by Mr. Manuel Lorenzana with the watchful eyes of appointed pastors — Rev. Meynardo Jose and Rev. Isaac Colorado.
...
Educational Building and other Projects and Donations
... Additional space was needed to cater to the spiritual and educational needs of members. Through the leadership of Ms. Laura R. Gorospe, chairperson of the Commission on Education and the assigned pastor, Rev. Meynardo R. Jose, groundbreaking ceremonies were conducted on April 30, 1967. The newly constructed educational building was dedicated on May 17, 1971 led by Rev. Nathaniel Cortez, administrative pastor. Two days after, the 61st Philippines Annual Conference session was held at St. John UMC. Repairs and renovations were done in 1981, so with the construction of the 3rd floor. It was in 1989 when the Music Room at the 3rd floor, conceptualized by Arch. Chona Elvas-Ponce, was completed, courtesy of concerned church members and the choir members themselves. In January 1994, the 4th floor roof deck, windows and doors were completed. In March 1996, to enhance worship time, the Church Tambourine Group was organized.
...
On March 22, 1982, the first church vehicle was acquired. A brand new Besta Van was bought on June 21, 1996, partly from the sale of the old church vehicles. A P50,000.00 seed money was contributed by the Lorenzana family to start the church canopy on July 15, 1984. New church comfort rooms were constructed with marble-tiles through the leadership of the WSCS led by Mrs. Ruth Manaois and Mrs. Remedios Aquino, supervised by Mr. Moises Tovera in November 1985. Some 136 New International Version Bibles were donated by the WSCS in 1986. On that same year, 100 copies of the Tagalog Version Bibles were donated by the Manaois family. Eight narra pews donated by the Adult Choir led by Mrs. Norma Mapanao were dedicated on July 1, 1986. The Highway Pulpit, donated by Mr. & Mrs. Victorino Ramos and family was installed in 1988, together with the wall electric fans and chandeliers for the main sanctuary. In 1994, new Bibles were donated by Col. & Mrs. Glen Rabonza and Mr. & Mrs. Dominador Vinluan, Jr. In 1998, 300 Devotional Study Bibles donated by Mr. & Mrs. Victorino Ramos and family were dedicated. These bibles were distributed to member-families of St. John UMC.
...
The SJUMC Kiddie Center was established in June 1984 as St. John Christian Pre-School, a brainchild of Mrs. Remedios Aquino. Ms. Alegria Alapan was the first teacher assisted by Ms. Pearl Enciso and Ms. Denia Maulion. The first Kiddie Board was composed of Mrs. Remedios Aquino, Atty. Teodoro Pascua, Mrs. Virginia Udaundo, and Mr. Porfirio Ardales, Jr. The present name of the school came about in 1985. Originally intended as an outreach program of the church, it accepted children regardless of race, religion, social and economic status. St. John Kiddie Center underwent some expansion and improvement of its physical facilities in May-June 1988 under the watchful eye of Ms. Laura Gorospe, the Kindergarten Committee chairperson. Two airconditioning units were donated by Mrs. Ruth Manaois and Mrs. Aurora Lorenzana. A landmark was started by Dr. Lorlyn Travinia, past chair of the Kiddie Committee, in producing and preparing school policies, rules and regulations, and now continued by the present chair, Mrs. Merlita M. Estrellas. Mrs. Adora Fe M. Apostol is designated as registrar-cashier of the school.
...
Renovations of the church office and the conference room were done from October 1999 to July 2000 through the close supervision of Arch. & Arch. Jose Francisco Aquino, Engineer Wilfredo Cabalce and Engr. Arnuel Cruz. New office pieces of furniture and other needs of the church staff were purchased. The newly renovated office and conference room are located at the 2nd floor of the educational building. These church facilities were dedicated and blessed during the 48th founding anniversary of St. John UMC, with Bishop Emerito P. Nacpil and Congressman Luis Taruc as special guests.
...
In time for the Advent season celebration in 2001, the main sanctuary, the pews, the facade and canopy were applied new coats of paint, under the supervision of Arch. & Arch. Sonny Aquino. Buckets of paint needed for the project were all donated by Engr. & Engr. Danilo Tuazon. The painting projects were spearheaded by the United Methodist Men headed by Mr. Victorino Ramos and the Church Council chaired by Atty. Jose Javier. Church members shared their blessings to finish the project before the 2001 advent season.

Historical Landmarks during Church Anniversary Celebrations
... Yearly, a joint worship service of all worshiping congregations in the morning and musical concerts in the evening were very distinct features in the celebration of the local church’s founding anniversaries. St. John UMC, for that matter, is widely known as "The Singing Church." To mention some, a goodwill concert tour to the Cagayan Valley with Dick Mazo as choir director and Vicente Velasco as accompanist was done. Two anniversary concerts were performed at the Philamlife Auditorium in July 1972 and July 1974, respectively. The Silver Jubilee Concert was held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines with no less than Noel Velasco and Ed Dimangondayao with the Chancel Choir. The Chancel Choir was a participant in the International Chorale Fest at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Fork Arts Theater and Makiling on January 12-25, 1979. Noel Velasco conducted the Chancel Choir in all instances. Noteworthy was the success of the Chancel Choir in the Loyola Memorial Park choir competition on April 1, 1979. They were awarded first prize, a trophy, and P5,000.00. The cash prize was used to purchase a piano for the music room. On the other hand, Jerry Mazo conducted the "Chancel Sounds" held at the Philamlife Auditorium during the 35th founding anniversary. In 1998 choir concert tours were held at Wesleyan University Philippines, Good Samaritan UMC, Cosmopolitan Church, and Sanchez Mira and Claveria, both in Cagayan province.
...
Significant Church and Congregational Programs
... Since its founding as a local congregation in 1952, evangelistic crusades and mission activities have become the lifeblood streams of St. John UMC. Known national and local evangelists and preachers were invited to share the message. Bible study groups and clusters in different barangays were organized and maintained to date. Medical-Optical-Dental-Evangelistic (MODE) mission programs were undertaken, both on campus and in mission points, with the able assistance of Mary Johnston Hospital coordinated by Mrs. Lydia Venzon. Funds from Hope United Methodist Church, USA, were significant contributions for these projects.
...
Upon the initiative of Alex and Estela Ponce, Bible study sessions were conducted in 1966 at the GSIS Village, Project 8, Q.C. by Rev. Isaac Colorado and Rev. David Santiago. Eventually, a house-church was organized with Rev. Colorado as preacher. It was Pastor Drod Hizona who was assigned as part-time pastor after Rev. Colorado. Pieces of chair and a musical organ were donated by SJUMC. It was on May 20, 1967 that Village Methodist Church was recognized as a worshiping congregation by the Philippines Annual Conference.
...
In 1978, Rev. Benedicto de Guzman, conducted Bible study sessions at the residence of the Grospe family, SSS Village, Marikina, Rizal. Evangelistic activities were undertaken by Mr. Pat Espiritu and Mr. Apolinar Maghanoy in 1982. Two pastors of SJUMC alternated in going to preach to the believers at SSS Village — Rev. Abelardo Ibasco and Rev. Bernabe Colorado. A 409-sq.-meter lot was bought for P169,000.00 to construct a new church which was named The Church of the Living Word, a daughter church of SJUMC.
...
Another satellite mission church of SJUMC, which eventually named as "The Way Fellowship" was organized, blessed and dedicated on August 16, 1992 under the leadership of Rev. Abelardo Ibasco & Rev. Alejandro Canete with the close participation of Atty. Rachel Espiritu.
...
An ongoing mission extension of the church is Pinyahan. It was started as a Bible study group in 1994 by Pastor San Pedro in a motorshop owned and operated by Mr. Tito Estrada. Mr. Estrada and his family and some of his workers were the first attendees. When Mr. Estrada was ejected from the place in 1966, the group met in the street with Rev. Simeon Latonero and Rev. Arsenio Ullo leading. The group returned in 1998 in the motorshop. The pastors who alternated in leading them were Dr. Meynardo Jose, Rev. Nathaniel Cantor, Pastor Porfirio Ardales, Jr., and Pastor Emmanuel Adviento. From 2000-2001 the spiritual and religious activities of Pinyahan were supplied by Pastor Roger Gutierrez, seminary student-pastor. In 2001-2002 Pastor Hope Jordan Guerrero, a student-pastor, joined Pastor Gutierrez in the Pinyahan mission, alternating in preaching and teaching the brethren. This conference year, Pastor Gutierrez and Bro. Edgar Capili (who took the place of Pastor Jordan), and some lay people like Mrs. Nelia Tarasona and Mrs. Maria Mercado are lending their assistance, especially now that the worship and Sunday School time are held in the morning.
...
On March 27, 1974, SAGIP, a children’s project sponsored by the World Vision International and St. John UMC was started. It intended to assist and sponsor children and families in depressed areas in the field of education and livelihood. Atty. Augusto Cabral was the chair of the Board of Governors, with Mrs. Caridad Puzon, Mr. Josue Florendo, Mrs. Ruth Manaois, and Ms. Virgie Udaundo as members. It was voluntarily dissolved after several years believing that the objectives were already accomplished.
...
Other projects included "Operation Tuli" spearheaded by Atty. Rachel Espiritu and the medicals team of Atty. & Mrs. Jose Javier, Jr. Fire and flood victims at Project 4 and other places were provided assistance to the tune of P25,000.00 and sacks of rice and boxes of used and brand new clothing. Spiritual and moral support were extended by SJUMC to churches in Polomolok (Cotabato), Magsaysay (Mindoro), Lubao (Pampanga), Makuto (Aklan), and San Mateo (Rizal). Financial help for the pastor and funds for the purchase of a church lot in Cogeo, Antipolo were also extended.
...
It was on the 18th founding anniversary on July 11, 1970 that a layman’s award was given. Mass wedding of ten couples was witnessed by the local congregation on June 4, 2000. On July 1, 2001, the publication of a church newsletter, The Forerunner, was started, prepared and edited by the administrative pastor, Rev. Anacleto G. Guerrero. First issue was launched on the 49th founding anniversary of St. John UMC in 2001.

Scholarship Grants
... In 1963 a scholarship committee was organized which was called Scholarship Society headed by Atty. Sancho Niedo as chair. The Society had assisted future pastors and deaconesses in their studies either at Union Theological Seminary, Harris Memorial College, Mary Johnston Hospital School of Nursing. Scholars included the following: Romy del Rosario, Bernabe Colorado, James Ling (from Malaysia), Ester Cabacungan, Donna Quiroz, and Madel Esposo. The society was dissolved after several years.
...
The Lorenzana Scholarship was born in 1991 with Mr. Dominador Vinluan as chair. It was organized in memory of Mr. Manuel Lorenzana. Mrs. Aurora Lorenzana continued the efforts as the chief donor. Eventually, the endeavor became the SJUMC-Lorenzana Scholarship Committee which invited other donors to contribute. Recipients of the Committee’s scholarship grants include the following: Remedios Keyda (Union Theological Seminary), Rodolfo de la Cruz (Union Theological Seminary), Cleto Pera (Union Theological Seminary), Roger Gutierrez (Wesley Divinity School), and Mizpah Ramos (Harris Memorial College). Today it has a lone grantee, Edgar Capili (Philippine Christian University, Dasmarinas, Cavite).

Domingo, Financial Secretary, received P7,301.00 for the project on February 25, 1979. A master list of donors and their respective contributions from January to May 1979 is intact, with total donations amounting to P18,422,47. On July 8, 1979, Mr. Aseron was citing in his letter the turning over of P336.94 and his resignation as UMM treasurer. He resigned on June 7, 1979. On May 25, 1980 a UMM Fellowship Luncheon was held and 39 people contributed P15.00 each. This was reported by then UMM treasurer, Mr. Felix M. Silva. Conclusion
...This material is not a finished work. It has more to tell. Time and space limit the reality of a complete account, for if we mention all the things we wanted to include, volumes must be tenaciously prepared. The years ahead should allow someone or a group to dig more into the pages of St. John UMC’s life for a more comprehensive and exhaustive presentation. The writer’s less than a couple of years’ exposure with St. John UMC as administrative pastor is obviously wanting. This has to be done, anyway, since its circulation is much overdue. The writer claims inadequacy to present what every member expects of this material. Charge it to some inevitable events and experiences since its inception. However, with its shortcomings, we can still praise and thank our Almighty God for His guidance and blessing.
